The Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore) was formed in 1990 by some engineers and doctors working at the National University of Singapore. The aim of this society is to bring together the professional interests of those in engineering and medcine, and create opportunities for networking and interaction. Presently the membership list to the BES includes the Nanyang Technological University, all the polytechnics, and some of the major hospitals.

Its general object of the Society is to promote professional excellence in Biomedical Engineering. The Society will :-

Serve as an impartial and non-political advisory body on biomedical engineering.
Effect scientific exchanges among its members and others by collecting and disseminating information through publications, correspondence, regional courses and scientific meetings.
Encourage, promote and assist in efforts to co-ordinate or guide research and development related to biomedical engineering.
Encourage, guide and support the efforts of those responsible for the education and training of the professions involved and coordinate these activities.
Undertake appropriate projects to encourage and facilitate uniform practice by developing standards nomenclature, techniques and instrumentation.
